And why is 3,000 rpm on the interstate something to be scared of? I have to be going 90 mph before I reach 3,000 rpm in fifth, so no, having a dog fifth gear may be better for you, but not for all of us.

yeah 5th is a dog but its better than running 3000 rpm on the interstate.

The problem is if i could only get 14mpg out of my mustang i would have never gotten it. i can't aford two cars. so i have to make do and the mustang was a well balanced car.

See this is where once again you arent thinking. If you're looking for power, why the fvck would you use 5th gear.... you're bragging you have power in 5th gear who cares? Its an overdrive if you understand that its not even made to be punched. If you want power downshift to 3rd.... youll have MUCh more power, if you're not gonna bother to downshift whats the point of owning a stick... get an auto.

Read....DAILY DRIVER
Who is talking about punching anything in fifth gear? Normal passing can now be done in fifth gear. Everyday driving to work, for me at least, doesn't often require "power downshifting" where I live. But what do I know, i've only been driving a stick for 30+ years.

Who gets 14 mpg? Even I get around 20 mpg in daily driving.

I have noticed several instances where people running 4.10 gears are exaggerating about freeway rpm's and max gear speeds. These are typically individuals who are running a short gear, trying to 'sell' the idea of a really short gear to someone who is enquiring about a switch. I have also noticed that people with 4.10 gears get really defensive when the debate about gears comes up. Often their logic is, "I'm running them, so everybody else should too". Short gears aren't for everyone. There is something to be said about a balanced gear, like a 3.55. Remember, the ONLY benefit of running really short gears is that it allows your car to accelerate slightly faster. -One advantage is traded for several disadvantages. The 4.10 gear has it's place, and that's at the track, not on the street. That my opinion.
Oh and to who ever said they can do 35mph in first gear with 4.10's you're ****ing full of ****. I redline at 30 with stock gears. Stop spreading bad information.
I would never gear that low again on a daily driver. I'm really digging the 3.55s in my '06. Nice balance for a daily driver.

RE: 373 gears are in - really dont like them
I had 3.55's stock and swapped them for 4.10's about 20,000 miles ago. Never regretted it yet.
Mike, did you change stock 3.31's for 3.55's. No offense but is it worth the expense for such a small change in ratio?

I think the 05+ may have came with 3.55's, not positive though.
4.10's just make the care feel like driving an import... driving my friends subby wrx you're in like 4th gear at 30-35 mph... for cruising, i think it sucks, just my opinion.

RE: 373 gears are in - really dont like them
Thats a good point. For cruising around to be in 4th at 35-40 mph does suck. In just about any 5 speed car I've owned 3rd gear is your all around most usable gear. From 25 mph to 70 mph you could use 3rd and its perfectly acceptable. Of course opinions and needs/desires vary. But unless your weekend driving your car and racing occassionally at local events I think the 323 or possibly 355 is about the highest you should go for a daily driver. Most town driving is a quick short shift up to 3rd for me and then only downshifting when absolutely needed. I often "walk" the car through stop signs in 2nd with no problems. Of course it depends on the visibility of the intersection. Maybe that (and Mobil 1) are why I have about 150,000 trouble free miles. On the highway the car always sees 85 mph in 5th and settles in there as traffic permits.
