platform wise, I don't see where you're coming from. There is nothing in an 03 that he couldn't replace with the same or better in the 98. See the problem that people are forgetting is that even after forking out 30k for an 03, he's still got several hundred... no actually, thousands of dollars yet to spend to get the 650hp beast that people all picture. The 98 is potentially a lighter, sturdier, stronger, better 700+ hp beast long before he reaches the price of a bone stock 390 hp cobra.

03-04 Cobra is a much better platform. The potential is basically endless. You will end up spending alot more $$ on your '98 to get to the point of what a bolt on 03-04 Cobra can achieve.

i side with code on this one, the 03-04 cobra goes for around 30 grand, which really isnt much if you have a good downpayment, if insurance wasnt so high i could possibly get one pretty soon and im 19. you could put the 20k difference or whatever, into the 98 cobra which i agree could definetly make it faster and handle better, but i personally would rather have the 03 cobra with all that power and potential already. unless you have all the time and facilities to rebuild your motor, buy a t56 tranny, and upgrade your brakes/ fuel system/suspension etc id go with the cobra. me, i couldnt wait 2-3 years, i mean the 03-04 cobra is the way id reccomend, but i dont think id last that long. good luck on your decision, i have a similar one to make.
