Biggest tires for stock wheels?
Whats the widest tires that will fit on the stock wheels of a GT. I have the torque thrust wheels on a 03GT. Right now they are 245's and I'd like to get them as wide as possible. Thanx.

This is something I've been wondering myself. What are spacers and what are they used for?

Umm, torque thrust wheels did not come stock on gt's. Maybe you have bullitts, becuase i've heard people say they look similar. Anyways, you can run up to 275/40/17 on the stock rims. That is if they are 8 inches wide.
Just because a tire fits, doesn't mean it's the best size for the job. With an 8" wide rim, the best tire size truly is either 245 or 255 max. If your looking for maximum traction and handling, stick with the correct size tires for your rim. If you want wider...go wider rims.

RE: Biggest tires for stock wheels?
Does anyone ever "read" the suggested rim size when buying tires. Every chart of every manufacturer's product line lists a wealth of information on each tire. Two of the most important being "suggested rim size" (actually necessary so not to possibly void your warranty, not to mention maintain a degree of safety) and "revolutions per mile". The standard GT rim of 17" x 8" will optimally support only up to the standard 245/45-17 tire. Even going to 255/45 (or 40)-17 will require at least an 8.5" to 9" width rim (to be safe). If you attempt to mount a 275 width tire on your 8" rims, you stand the risk of creating a very hazardous situation in not only highway running but even mounting as well. I believe the Cobras have 275's all the way around but they also have 10" rim widths! Just "read" the tech charts on the tires you are interested in and all your questions will be answered. The "revolutions per mile" will tell you how accurate or inaccurate your speedometer will read after making the tire swop. You have to match as close as possible the "revs per mile" on any tire you are choosing, otherwise your speedometer will read either high or low depending on overall diameter difference from the stock 245/45-17.
Here is one such chart at Tire Rack for Avon tires: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...1=yes&place=11
The perfect matching RPM to the stock 245/45-17's without changing rim diameter size is 275/40-17. You will also note the recommended rim width is 9"-11". But, since the tire width is actually 9.5", at least a 10" rim width would be your best choice. In this case, as mentioned above, rim spacers will be necessary so not to rub on your suspension when turning the wheels right or left. Maximum Motor Sports probably has the best overall quality versus price out there: http://maximummotorsports.com/spacers.asp
Good luck!
