Right now i'am running 10w-40 non synthetic in my 98 gt with 143,000 miles on it. Somone told me that i should put that in my car to reduce the chances of an oil leak is this bad or should i change it back to 5w-30 and or put synthetic in it?

There are oils that are specifically designed for high mileage vehicles. Valvoline makes a high mileage blend. Maybe at least run a blend like motorcraft or some other premium blend.

My dad had a 1997 crown vic 4.6l that had about 150k miles on it. We always used conventional Havoline oil and then one day the engine started acting terrible. We took it to the dealership and when they took the heads off the entire motor was sludged up. We had to sell the car to a used car dealer. He took out the old engine, trashed it, and put a new engine in then sold it. The worst part was my dad had just spent good money getting the car painted. Now he runs motorcraft blend since he got his new cv back in 2001.

IMO, with today's high performance, sports tuned engines, no one should run anything less than a blend.

never heard of an "oil flush"? You should do them regularly to prevent build up of sludge and varnish.

I would stick with the recommended oil unless you are having problems.

stick with the recommended, the 4.6 has very close clearances and it does not like "thicker" oil.
