Considering a 1998 Mustang GT, but it makes a noise during acceleration?
I'm considering purchasing a 1998 Mustang GT with about 135,000 miles on it, but when you accelerate, anything past 3,000 RPM, it makes a rattling noise. The guy says it's because he put 87 gas in it. After trying to get more out of him, he said the injectors need premium gas, and that by switching back and using a fuel additive of some kind it will be fine? At first he said just the last tank was 87, which would be odd, and then he said the problems been going on for awhile, so that doesn't add up. He said he took it to the dealer, and that was what they told him. Could that be correct? Does that have any other serious effects on the car? Should I pass? I can get it for $3500.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

you should pass unless you are looking forward to doing a lot of work on it. if the guy has a car that is really pinging because of the octane, wtf is he doing putting 87 in it?!? who knows what else he messed up on this car.

rattling like exhaust? also it might be something stupid like a loose o2 sensor, yes ive had this happen and it took me forever to figure it out. they rattle like a **** at around 3 grand. if you can take it for a test drive, bring it to a lift and check everything out. good luck. oh and no, it doesnt need premium fuel and that shouldnt be the problem.

i wish i could hear the rattle cause ive had so many stupid ones that were absolutely no brainers to fix.

you should be able to tell pretty easily whether it is coming from the engine or from a loose part somewhere. if it's pinging it should be somewhat obvious

My 98 Mustang did that the exact same thing. Neither me nor my mechanic had any idea what the cause was so I decided to trade it in on an 01 GT. I would suggest that you look at another Mustang. SN95's are everywhere and I am sure you could easily find another one for close to the same price. It sounds to me like the person selling the car doesn't know what is causing the problem, and is offering you an easy solution to make it seem like there is nothing wrong with it. You should tell HIM to put the premium or fuel additive or whatever in it, then you will take another look at it and consider purchasing it again.

I would have a mechanic check it out first and just get another opinion on the car, but as the one guy said, there will be plenty more SN95's out there. So, if this isn't the one, then I'm sure you'll find another one.

I smell something funny...
Now…. Answer this question. If all this guy needed to do to the car to make it not ping on your test drive was to fill it up with some premium gas, don’t you think he would have done it to avoid the question “what’s that noise?â€
