RE: how many miles ya'll 96s have?
my 97 GT has 109000 on it. Runs absolutely **** but burns a good amount of oil. Not sure WTF the deal is, I think it's winter + valve stem seals being gay. It got like 25mpg on the highway so I know it's solid. Saving for a crate motor!
Here is an idea. It will cost around $100, but see if you can get that stang to a reputable shop by you and have them do a full inspection on it. Compression test, etc, brakes... so on and so forth. That could reveal either A) a fabulous car you can now buy or B) that it has something direly wrong with it.
The 96-98 4.6 are pretty 'weak' compared to the 99-04, but for their time they were the shizz. I love mine, sounds good and has loads of torque, and it's pretty much un modded. Like I've heard before, "hey it's a Mustang!"
(this is my dream car which will ultimately be my project turned trailer queen afraid to hit the gas fast car)

My 97 Cobra has 120k on it right now... and in almost complete stock form is putting down factory numbers still
I think the 4.6's are good for tons of miles as long as they are not completely and totaly abused.

my 96 4.6 had 110K+ miles on it and ran like a champ before i swapped it out for the saleen motor. only problem was the intake crack bs, but thats an easy fix looking back it it now. no doubt in my mind that motor would run another 100k miles if properly maintained. 3800$ is a damn good price for a 96gt. i paid 5400$ last year.
