Default Cams install...

Anybody know about how long it would take a professional to install a set of cams? I am trying to see about how much it would cost to get some cams installed around here. I read the cams sticky and it said to expect an install price of about $200, however prices seem to be more than most people would expect because I live in a small town.

My total install cost was close to 500 bucks, but I had springs put in as well. The springs took a ****load of time, and my shop had never done it before.

IMO if your shop hasn't done it before you are better off driving somewhere else to have it done.

Well I usually do everything through this one shop because I am friends with one of the guys who works there. When I was asking about gears, they quoted me pretty close to $800 parts and labor. Which would mean about 600 bucks for gears install. That seems to be about twice what everybody else is payin... I briefly asked about cams after I got my exhaust installed. He said he would look up how much the cams would cost and give me an estimate, however I neglected to get back to him about it. I would be getting stage 1s without springs and if I got a tune it would from a handheld. I don't feel like driving 10 hours to get a half-decent tune...

$600 for gear install, thats a big rip off. Most shops do it for around $200-250. Sorry bout your shop luck.

I only asked that one place. This was back when I had my 98 though. I'm not sure if maybe he just thought the gears would be more expensive than they really are, or if he is actually charging that much labor. If I could get gears installed for 200-250 bucks I would have to pounce on it.... I guess I'll just have to ask around.

I would hope so. Most muffler places around here do gears because they get a lot of buisness from people with big ol' lifted trucks than want to compensate for their taller tires. Around where I live, they would probably have the most experience installing gears, which means it wouldn't take as long, which means it would probably be cheaper. I dunno tho, guess I'll have to call around tomorrow.
