i got an o/r x pipe to the flowmaster....before the x it looks to be the stock mid pipe, has two cats that i can see. ..plus the difference in the pipe condition( clean or rusted) is a good indicator if it stock or after market....but im really not sure

the 98GT obviously comes with a FACTORY H-pipe. That's why it's called FACTORY, it was put their by the FACTORY.

The stock H-pipe will have 4-6cats on it and will be 2 1/4" in diameter.

Most aftermarket midpipes will have 2 or 0 cats on it, and will be 2.5" in diameter.

Soooooo.... if you don't see any cats on your midpipe than it's not the stock or "factory" midipe.

the factory h-pipe comes with 4-6 cats on it and is 2 1/4" in diameter. An aftermarket is 2 1/2" in diameter and can have no cats or high flow cats, giving you greater hp gains.

edit: quickshift you beat me by 8 seconds [:@]

If your running a hacked up stock mid pipe (which is probably hurting more so than helping) you would definately see gains by replacing it with an aftermarket.

If you plan on doing more mods then just exhaust, say a supercharger or what not.. Get a whole catback and midpipe. Since it seems like you just welded in some flows, and hacked up the FACTORY H-pipe.

+1. I would buy a whole new exhaust system.

Also, the aftermarket pipes have mandrel bent tubing for smoother bends and less restriction....

rstylianou, don't make this harder than it is. To make horsepower our cars need to breathe. Cutting off the cats on a 2 1/4" factory h pipe probably gave you a few more hp than stock but not as much as a 2 1/2" aftermarket catless h or x pipe. Although you have no cats, you still have a small diameter in mid pipe and exhaust which is restrictive (especially where you welded in the flow tubes after removing 6 cats). If you want more hp, go with 2 1/2" h or x pipe and 2 1/2" cat back exhaust.

Opening up the exhaust is not always the magic pill that it is put up to be. You lose low end torque when you open up the exhaust on a stock car (especially 2 valves which already suffer in the low end torque dept). Lots of horsepower is nice but torque gets you off the line. Look at your future goals and determine the direction you want to take.
