Actually you only need 5 quarts. SOHC- 5 quarts, DOHC- 6 quarts. At least that's what it says on our computers at Advance. But since ours doesnt have a dipstick, there's really no way to tell. But I've used 5 quarts and everything runs great.

You can run 5w30. The weights of oil really isn't a big deal. The weight of oil depends on the temperature. There's a chart somewhere saying what oils best for what temperature.
That's why you don't trust a computer all the time.. I know it takes at least 6 sometimes a little more in mine.. It even says so in the back of my manual.
In the manual it says 5 quarts and on another page it says 6 quarts. I don't know if there is a variance in the years from 96-98 and 99-04 tho. 5 quarts has been ran through my car for miles and I have 0 problems. Keep spending the extra 5-6 bucks on that quart of oil. It's your money.

6 quarts in the 04 I know. I use mobil 1 5w20. The dipstick shows low on the 04 gt with 6 quarts, but its ok. The dipstick is off.

6Q for 4.6 V8. DOHC uses maybe a LITTLE more, but not that much more.

Nab some Royal Purple. I love the stuff.

Filters? Splurge a little and either just get a motorcraft one, or get a K&N. Stay away from Fram.

With that many miles, run 5w-20. Lighter weight oil would be better for you because you have a high compression ratio in that engine.

i put in 10w-40 mobil1 because thats all autozone had when it came to mobil1 synthetic blends, those god damn hippies. my stang definitely seems to run great, hope i dont hurt my baby. ill make sure to get some 5w-20 in here next change.

my friends keep telling my thicker/heavier oil is better in the winter, i figured the colder, the thinner(lighter) you want, since the low temps make it thicker, and the hotter, the thicker(heavier) you want, since hot temps thin out oil...am i wrong?

I dont either ackuric, unless they spill a quarter of the quart of oil when they pour it in. But whatever.

I use mobil I 5w-20 in my '04 GT and change it every 6000 miles, well within recommended range, and it comes out super clean. Your engine is made to benefit in fuel economy from 5w-20, and doubling the change interval doesn't hurt it at all. I was fleet manager of a Gas utility for awhile, we had Cavaliers used as meter reading vehicles which got changed every 7500miles. We had one that had a oil pump failure (not due to lubrication failure, factory tolerance problem) but that engine was spotless inside, considering it idled constantly and was used stop and go, amazing! So, 6000miles on Mobil 1 doesn't phase me in the least. And yes, GT's are 6 quarts with filter. Only my '04 5.4 F-150 took 7, that i know of.

dude is your friend a mechanical engineer? in paticular the one that designed your engine. i am guessing not your engine was engineered to run 5-20 you would have been better off to run regular oil than a heavy synthetic.
