Vibration after U-Joint replacement
Hey Guys,
Haven't been on in a while, and I did a little searching of the archives, but didn't really find exactly what I was looking for...
My question is, are our driveshaft's rear Pinion flanges balanced when made, or are they actually balanced after they're produced??
The reason I ask is, I did my U-Joints the other day, and thought everything was fine. I marked off the flange so I could reinstall it, since my father had told me they used to do that back in the day, because they were balanced a certain way..
I got onto the highway, and after 40mph, I started getting a NASTY vibration upon part throttle acceleration/deceleration. It sort of evened out when I got on the gas, and went mostly away when I was totally off the gas...
I've also been advised the U-Joints may have been bad. I'm more than sure that none of the needle bearings collapsed, since the caps went on smoothly, and fit perfectly..
Any ideas??? TIA
JT

RE: Vibration after U-Joint replacement
I didn't necessarily want to bring this back from the dead for the purpose of bashing a specific shop, and the chances of any of you guys using them, is pretty slim..
I finally found out what the vibration was, and it happens to be the Pinion shaft bearings are TOAST... After I repeatedly brought my car back to have them check over it, since I had vibration and a bit of whining STILL after I had the rearend rebuilt, they kept telling me it's okay. I'm no drivetrain specialist, but when I was able to get in there to look, everything looked okay....
Panhandle Transmission is the name of the place, it's in Lynn Haven Florida (Panama City Area). I had a written promise from them I'd have my car in a week, and the quote was for $1000, or somewhere around there. Final bill: $1800, mostly because I had them put in an Eaton LSD. Total time they had the car: 1 Month. I ended up having to take time off from work, and you military folks know how much they love that....
At the time, I was doing an extreme amount of traveling for the US Military, and didn't really have a bunch of time to do the work myself, especially since I've never done a Rear Diff before, nor did I have the luxury of another mode of transportation, and I worked 45 minutes from where I lived.... I now live in Massachusetts, so even if I wanted to take legal action, they could always claim it as Wear and tear. I've always made sure the diff. was full of fluid, so that's not the issue. Either they didn't shim it right, in haste when I started mentioning lawyers, or they reused old bearings.. At this point I don't care...
So anyone who reads this in that area, please re-read my post, and take warning...
