Default Rethinking my life. . .

Reading that big post mike did about the supercars has made me think. Most of us throw in gears and call it a day. We all know what gears will do to a car. But if you look at all the supercar makers the stock gears are high as could be. 3.08's, 2.73's, etc. And those cars are so much faster than ours. Ive always thought that suspension and gears is the way to go. Ive beat up a lot of cars that had more hp than me just for the fact that my suspension is built and i have 4.30's. But deep gears takes all the fun out of driving. Maybe instead i should just throw in the stock mustang 3.27 gears, a T-56 transmission, and get a centri blower. . . . Two reasons i can think of that the supercar boys dont put deeper gears are a) They want to post good MPG numbers and b) they want to say they can crack off 200 mph in third gear. Back in the 60's and 70's manufacturers were putting 3.73's, 4.10's and even 4.56's stock from the factory and not even thinking about it twice. What do you guys think about this?

I myself am not a big fan of 4.10s or higher! ive got 3.73 in my car and still wish it was geared lower! Im like u in saying build the motor and have low gears, or high whatever ya know what im trying to say

Since you already put in the gears and spent the money, why would you want to spend even more just to be alittle slower switching to stock gears?

No im not saying that at all. Im just saying maybe i thought about this all wrong. And with a t-56, blower, and stock gears id be able to go a lot faster and pull like a raped ape on the freeway. But i wont actually do this stuff im just thinking out loud.

Just saying its funny how all the supercar guys use really really high gear ratios. Like 3.08, 2.73's, etc

But these supercars are much lighter, their transmission gearing is waaaaaaay different. Their powerband is much much different too....

They don't need a 3.73/4.10/4.30. It would just make the cars almost impossible to drive on the street.

If I ever got another NA car, I'd never bother with stock gears again.

Most of those supercars have tubros. If you were going to re-think your whole setup a turbo would be the only way I would go.

tall gears to compensate for their close-ratio trannys, and the fact stated above, the motors are only 3.6 litre v8's that pump out about 425BHP (I forget which ferrari model...) so they're able to rev much higher because they have less rotating mass giving them in turn a muchhhh better power curve.

ok.. time for breakfast.

EDIT: it's the 360 Modena Challenge Stradale with such an amazing powerplant.

I've beaten cars top end on the I80 more times than I can count. With my stock 215 NPI I burried deep past 150 and left Roushes, beamers and Porches in my wake. My Dyno speed alone in 4th gear was 160+mph. The problem is I am rarely ever racing top end super cars.

If I where to build an ultimate motor for super car status. It would have to a low compression, 30lbs of boost, small displacement with a short stroke. When I get my SC i'll be waiting on the gears to see how she drives at around 380-3900hp with my stock gears.

You've had your NPI up to 150 on the street and 160 on a dyno? The most mine got up to 140 on the street and I was buried in 4th. Were your stock gears 2.73's or what?
