Is my engine detonating??? update post 24
well i have the notorious engine ticking, but i narrowed things down so i can describe them to you..
sounds like its coming from the drivers side. the tick gets outrageously loud after a long drive. when im sitting at 2000rpm-2500rpm, the ticking is constant and doesnt stop. i thought my engine was going to blow up.
do you think its the timing chain or w/e it is??? wtf can it be. i run 93, sometimes the warmer weather helps, but overall, the ticking is annoying and i cant take it anymore

can you tell where it's coming from exactly? with your head near the engine while it's running, you should be able to tell if it's coming from inside the timing cover or somewhere else. if you've got a camera and can get a video clip, put it up here and we might be able to help a little more.

And get a mechanic's stethoscope. That will help you locate it.
I once had a idler pulley going bad which sounded to all mechanics and techs like a p/s pump. well i changed it and nothing. damn fools. So i bought a 2 buck stethoscope and looked for the noise myself. It was the idler pulley, $10. P/S pump was a lot more. Sorry its late at night and i had to rant.
Do it yourself is what i say.

well it doesnt make the noise when i start it.. just does it when i drive. and i keep trying to record it but my phone wont pick up any noise... i wish i could explain it.
its just "tick tick tick TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK" shift "tick tick tick TICK TICK TICK!!!"
45mph in 5th gear i give it gas and it just ticks.. it does itin higher RPM's than 2500 but its hard to hear bc of the exhaust. but mainly just around 2000rpm-2500
but yeah, i cant get the sound to post up here..

RE: Is my engine detonating???
IF you wanted to do it the cheapest way possible, I suppose it would be possible to try to isolate the bad rod bearing or just replace them all and not touch anything else. At that point though you either have the motor pulled or k-member dropped and either way you have the oil pan out so there's no sense in not just rebuilding the motor at that point.
Long story short, you don't want it to be the rod bearing.

No cheap way to fix it. You have to tear down the motor and rebuild. The crank will have to be turned more then likely and you will need to install new bearings. The cheapest way to do it is to reuse the stock internals. I would suggest rehoning and reringing the cylinders and pistons why you have it apart.
