what does it take for a Stang to beat an ls1
#6
Are you drag racing or street racing? With some gears, suspension, cams, basic mods, headers, fuel injectors, and good driving you could take him on 1/8. My buddy had a formula firebird with an LT1 (with all the bolts ons like us). I could jump him (my other mustang but same basic setup) and get the 1/8 but he'd go past me shortly after. Him and his damn 6 speed... Chevys/GM are heavy though, and have to move the extra weight... But they do have bigger displacement and cheaper parts on ford.
Street racing, playing around (dont recommend it, as fun as it is), the mustang can put it on a chevy with aggressive lane changes or curves. Our cars handle much better. And they are toquey...
As said above NOS or forced induction is the best and easiest way to smoke him.
If you want your car to be "bad ***" you need to plan as much as possible. The parts you buy need to be what you will need in future if possible. For Example, if you dont upgrade your fuel system/ignition then your car will not be able to handle a power adder. So keep that in mind when buying parts so you dont have to buy twice. Sometimes you have to buy and sit on parts until you get the other parts to complete the setup.
It's a process and more of a question of how much time, money, mechinical knowhow, and driving ability does it take to beat your friend.
Also, I am decently new around here... So if all this advice I have been giving is unneeded or unwanted, just let me know. But I feel I have some decent knowledge to share.

A LOT OF MONEY!!!!
are we talking about street racing or at the track? if the ls1 is stock then your chances are higher. when the ls1 starts modding its not fair at all. most ls1's with full bolt ons are making 350rwhp or so and cammed 400+rwhp and h/c/i are making 440-480rwhp!
if its a 6 speed then it has the upper hand from a roll, and if its a stalled auto its gonna take a lot to beat it at the track. my buddies stalled/geared/exhaust 01 ran a 7.4 at the track on DRs (nittos).
oh and as for ls1's being heavy, mine weighs in at 3450 and my mustang was 3350 i believe? so not much difference there

And I stand corrected on the weight. +50 You are correct JJ03MustangGT. I am amazed at how close they are. My chevy buddies have even always agreed with me that they were heavier. I never thought I needed to look it up.
And sorry to hear about the Mustang loss. I feel your pain on repo and payment. That is why I have another mustang now. I own it 100% and no payment, and this one is convertible. My credit is shot for 4 more years though. I kept blowing engines and didn't know about cars then like I do now so replacing the motor was like 8,000 at the time. Only wish I had stripped my aftermarket parts off first so I wouldnt have had to buy them again now.
