Are the automatics really that much slower?

My opinion has always been there the difference is negligible unless you have mustang performance parts installed as well.
OP, get yourself a tuner before you go crazy with a stall and shift kit. You would be surprised how much of a difference it would make.

the difference stock isn't negligible and your company isn't that great.

You could get the shift kit and it would help your tranny last longer but would also recomend a trans coolers as well like someone else ahd said. You could get a tuner as well which you can adjust the shift firmness, basically making the tranny think you have a shift kit. With the tuner you can also change calibration with new gears as well so in case you get gears down the road as well.

Thanks guys! As to the tuner, I won't be changing gears as the car is now. All I plan to do to the car before graduating is small bolt-on things such as cold air, pulleys, new mufflers, and shift kit, mostly to make the driving experience more fun. After I graduate, the motor and tranny will be replaced with a terminator and a 6 speed, among many others
Looks like I will be going with the transgo, and maybe using a tuner.

Which statement should I rethink? I'd rather not get a stall, since it's my daily driver. As for the engine and tranny swap, I will be in a much different financial situation four years from now than I am today

i think you just answered your own question. as long as the stall isnt HUGE, then the streetablity shouldnt be altered whatsoever, except for making the car a lot faster
