03 GT Convert 4.6 Fuel Pump Out
My fuel pump went out yesterday, and the dealer towed it into his shop. He diagnosed it for me and wanted to charge me $650 to change the pump. I told him no thanks, and I trailered the car back home. It has just over 1/2 tank of fuel. Any way to get it out? Can I siphon it out through the filler neck? Is there a better way? I have all the tools and have the car on a lift, so dropping the tank once I get the fuel out isn't a problem. I have the special tools to disconnect the fuel lines, so I should be good there. Anything I should be aware of before I tackle this job?
I checked O'Reilly's online for a replacement pump. It was like $125 with the filter. Any better prices out there?
I'm just surching for some suggestions before I make some stupid mistake you guys already know about. I did check the fuse and the reset switch in the trunk and both were good.
Thanks for the help in advance.

get a SVT focus pump it'll cost less and flow more. I don't believe you can siphon the gas out, just put a floor jack under the tank and slowly lower it down.
The swap isn't difficult, just take your time.

Theres a couple ways Ive drained a tank before but it changes from vehicle to vehicle. Some cars have check ***** in the filler neck to prevent fuel from spilling out in a roll over and keep people from stealing your gas. I dont know if the mustangs have them so you would have to check. If your pump is completely dead one of the ways below will not work, but heres what Ive done before in the driveway/street.
1: Disconnect the line at the filter, turn the key on and let the pump drain the tank. (will not work if the pump dose not work at all)
2: Siphon the gas out of the filler neck with a tube or external electric fuel pump. (will not work with check ball)
3: Disconnect the line at the filter, attach a external fuel pump and siphon.
4: Drop the tank using a jack and rigged cradle
5: Have a buddy take one strap while you take the other and slowly lower the tank down supporting it and drag it from underneath the car (this sucks ***)
Good luck, I would rather do head gaskets than drop a gas tank.

Of course it would be easier to have all the fuel out but if you are on a lift and have a good transmission jack you can just lower the tank a little bit so you can get access to the top of the fuel hat. Once you take all the little bolts holding the hat to the tank you can just take the hat out and put the new pump in.
In other words, you you can do this with fuel in the tank because the tank doesn't have to be dropped too much.
