T56 - top speed and rear gear choices
#21
I really appreciate all of the help guys! Do you think you could give me an example of how one of the overall ratios might get out of wack with the engines output?
I mean if I am pushing between 400 and 450 hp at the crank (not for sure numbers just an estimate), and I am using a 4.30 or 4.56 with a total first gear ratio of either 11.44 or 12.13 is that considered out of line with my engine's output?

The stock 3650 was selected to work nicely with the stock 3.27 rear-end, the low (3.38:1) 1st gear was selected to give a satisfying launch with the OEM gears and the crappy 87 octane OEM tune. If you look at the overall ratios you can see that the jump from 1st (11.05:1) to 2nd (6.54:1) is pretty steep.
As I said in a previously, here in the flat lands with a 3.73 rear-end, I can almost launch effectively in 2nd gear--I am certain that if I had 4.10s (which I am pleased I didn't do) I'd never need or use 1st gear--and that's with a piddly 262HP peak. If I was running f/i with a positive displacement blower, and using the 3650, I'd stick with the OEM 3.27:1 gears...
