Question Help with Limited Slip Differential

I have been trying to do some research about Limited Slip Differentials but am having a hard time finding the answers.

Can someone briefly explain how it works, what 31 splines mean and are there different amount of splines on different mustangs, how do you know the size you would need (7.5" or 8.8") and when I see them for sale they say gears are not included, what kind of gears are needed with it to make them work?

with the rear, bigger is better. 8.8 is what your car comes with and is stronger than a 7.5. More splines equals more strength. Ive never heard of a 31 spline axle breaking on anything but an all out monster of a race car

limited slip differentials have clutches in the differential. Whenever the differential senses spin on one side, they differential pushes more torque to the wheel with traction to help maintain traction. Stock you have an 8.8 inch differential with 28 spline axles. People usually upgrade to 31 spline axles and some sort of 31 spline differential to handle the power of nitrous or blowers or just really hard N/A launches. When you buy a new differential, they dont have the rear gears with them. Everyone here talks about installing gears on the car first thing, well those are the same gears you need for the new differential. They come in the package as the ring gear, which gets attached to the differential, and the pinion gear which gets positioned in the front of the rear end housing on the inside. You can find them everywhere. And watch what gears you go wiht in regards to what your plans are for the car. 3.73's and 4.10's are the 2 major ones people recommend. I went with 4.10's and i'll let ya know how they feel in a week or so. But you also may want to try the search function as well for some answers. But i hope i got ya some answers...and i hope theyre all right. lol
