Weird noise when A/C is on...

Weird noise when A/C is on...
It sounds like compressed air escaping from somewhere when the A/C is on. It blows cold air and everything but this noise is really loud from outside the car. Also, when it starts making the noise, i can turn the A/C off and it stops. Any ideas?
