And just look at it!
I'm guessing it has a TON of miles.

Best deal I have seen was a 2001 Ford Mustang GT with perfect interior and exterior with only 38,000 miles for $7900.

Nice. Good deal for your sons first car. I got my 2002 Mustang GT in 2004 for around $14k and had only 33k miles on it. Was a steal back then when it was only 2 years old. Got it at a dealership as well.

mine had 83k on it and shat a bearing
something to keep in mind
when it happened a used one was going for 2k

Ok, First, here's a quick cell phone pic I snapped this morning on my way to work...We got home with it late last night...

The Good... Exterior, paint, body....near perfect! One very small door ding, that's it. Interior is in equally good condition. Clean and stain free, no rips tears or bad smells. Air is cold and all electrics work perfectly. Has brand new tire with the ******* still on them. The carfax looks like the car was well maintained at the dealer and it was a one owner car. The title indicates it was purchase in July 1999 with 7 miles on it.

The Bad... The motor has a rattle/tick/knock sound that seems to be valve train related. I don't notice it under a load, just at idle and it seems to come and go just a little bit. Its a sound that I could here on our 2004, just barely, but it's louder and more obvious on this car. Car has just a little hesitation and idles a little low, like it might die at a light. It runs a little bit rough, but it doesn't seem to miss. It doesn't seem as peppy as our 2004 5spd, but it runs out ok under load, transmission shifts fine, but needs a shift kit. Drove it 120 miles home with no problems, no leaks, all the guages were where they should be, rode fine, although it feels like a tire may be out of balance and just a little brake pulsation. A friend followed me home, he said he never saw any smoke, which would have been obvious at night in the headlights.

I was really on the fence about buying it. My first impression after starting it was, NO. But we drove it and looked at it and let it get good and hot and the sound never changed. Finally, for the money and the condition the exterior and interior, we decided to just take a chance. I haven't found a 99-04 GT around here for under $6000, and those were not as clean or well maintained. I think we may end up dropping a little money into the motor, but I think we still came out ahead. He's just gonna have to wait on the wheels and lowering it, LOL....

Thanks for the input!!!

Congrats on your purchase! The car does look great on the exterior from the pic you posted.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you pay for it?

He paid $4250 cash... I worked him pretty hard to get him down to $4000, but couldn't do it.

Ok, after listening to it some more, I think the noise is coming from the timing chain area. It's hard to tell which side, but as you rev it a little and let off it has a little more of a slapping sound for a second, just like a chain would sound. I think I will check the compression today and see how that comes out and try a new set of plugs, just to see where it's at before looking for a shop to take a look at the chain and tensioners. I'd also like to figure out what's causing the rough idle and sluggish power....
