wheel size's for 2002 gt

wheel size's for 2002 gt
I have a 02 GT with factory wheels with 245/ 45/ 17's. I'm not getting many miles on a set of tires, the ones that came on it was Goodyear got 12,500 and they was worn smooth on the edges.
have had two more sets on it since, with the last ones with 23,000 and they are gone. i live in the mountains with curvy roads and it wears the sides off. I'm wondering if i can go to a smaller wheel say 15" or 16" and get a higher profile tire, and if so what will work and help my problem????
looks aren't that important i just need more miles on a set of tires.
