Would this make a good commuter car?

If you want to buy an older car that gets good MPG, buy an old German diesel powered car (ie) Audi 4000 or VW Jetta TDI. They run forever, and there mechanically fuel injected so their easy to work on.

To the OP, I did the same thing. My uncle gave me a free '98 Monte Carlo V6 that gets about 24 mpg pretty much city. Isn't much better but I get to keep miles off my mustang which were getting a little crazy. Motor and other things needed work. Put about $500 into it. Tires last about twice as long as the mustangs do I'm pretty sure.
But as everyone was saying, see if it's cost effective. Shortly after I got the Monte Carlo running I had problems with my mustang so it was nice to have an extra car around that would run.
