Default Great Question

First off I'd like to say that you guys (cliffyk, sexynerd, fisher) are awsome man I LOVE YALL!! You guys always give great advice. But anywho, I Have some question that i would love to have answered, here goes.. 1. If i'm a second owner of a car and I don't know if the first owner changed the transmission fluid or service the rear end AT ALL. Would it still be safe to service those parts? The car has 102102 miles on it. Its an automatic. I just want to be safe and not sorry. I know you guys would understand.

Absolutely it would be safe. Just make sure you use the correct fluids and friction modifier for the rear end. And make sure you seal up the diff cover tight.

I have changed all the fluids, in every used car I have ever bought--motor and drivetrain right off the bat, coolant, brake, p/s, and others within 30 days--even if the previous owner/dealer swore on a stack of Bibles it had just been done. It's cheap insurance.

My father got me hooked on this almost 50 years ago.

i think flushing the trans is bad especially on a high mileage car b/c if a car has 100,000 miles on and has never been changed all of the clutch materal and little metal shavings that the trans has got to running with and distrubing it can cause trans failure. now as far as dropping the pan and changing the filter go for but i wouldnt flush it just my $ .02

Cant you flush the trans with the car running normally? Pump out a quart, shut down, add a quart, repeat until fluid comes out clean. Thats not a pressure issue and will get you to clean fluid. I would still drop the pan and clean it along with magnets and screen filter if it has one.

How are you pumping out the fluid? Sounds to me like you don't really understand automatic transmissions. The parts aren't just moving around there through the fluid. The fluid pressure is what controls the shifts. It moves through the vanes in the pump, valve body, torque convertor, and there's hundreds of passage ways for it to go through in the gear sets, clutches, and bands.

Also, most automatic trannies take 12-14 quarts of fluid for a flush. Dropping the pan only gets 5 or 6 quarts of it.

as far as metal shavings/etc in the tranny fluid... If I'm not mistaken, but my 99 (auto) had a magnet on the inside of the pan that collected all kinds of metal shavings/etc.
