Default tire fitment question

so i am looking to get 17x9 and 17x10.5 wheels. but i look on tire rack they say that a 245/45-17 will fit a 17x9 and a 275/40-17 will fit a 17x10.5 wheel.

however, AM says a 255/40-17 fits a 17x9 and a 315/35-17 will fit a 17x10.5 wheel.

what is the difference in the different tires size and will they fit the respective wheels? i'm only wondering because 245/40 and 275/40 are less expensive and i am interested in saving money, but i want to make sure i get the proper tire fitment.

The correct size tires for those rims are 275/40/17 and 315/35/17. The other sizes will fit, but will be stretched, and not work as well.

I would not go any less than 305 wide tires on a 10.5 wide wheel. I prefer 315's on that size or maybe even 335's but 315 is the norm on a 10.5 wheel. 315/35-17 tires are pretty prevalent and you'll have a nice selection of tires to choose from.

Sh*t. I run the 245/45/17 on mine. It's dropped in the front but not THAT dropped. I always guessed I could go wider/ Now I wish I had looked into it before I got my 2 new tires installed a few weeks ago and the other 2 6mo ago..
