Default 351W first motor build.

I'm planning on picking up a 351W this weekend or next weekend, and I plan on rebuilding it my idea is I want to put it in my 98Gt/drag car project I would like to keep it curbed, My main worry is making it work, I know I'll need a new k member, motor mounts and since its my first one I'm kinda on a learn as you go I'm not in a time crunch and I think this would be a sweet project once finished, My goal is to have it h/c/i and some n20 I just have alot of questions as to gauges, trans, pretty much making it work. I posted in the 5.0 351w section and got no responses so maybe you guys could point me in the right direction with my build

The guys in the 351 section take a while to respond but they are very knowledgable.

This swap is not for the faint of heart. It will cost a lot, take a lot of time and knowledge. Basically, nothing swaps over up front.

Here is a link to rebuilding a motor and on page 3 shows a book to help building a 351w which you should get.

Also, here is a link to a recent build from a member on here going from a 4.6 to a 351 stroked to a 408.

Here is a link to a thread that people post their 351/408 combo with track times and their H/C/I combo.

Send a pm to "sn95_331_GT_yellow" He is very knowledgable and helped me out a ton. Good luck!

I did the swap in my car, that's my thread in the links posted above. It wasn't easy, but you can do it. To answer your questions in the first post, You will need a 5.0 tranny like a T-5 or C-4, etc...... They may make a T-45/3650 swap bellhousing, but I've never seen one and it won't be cheap. As far as I have found, none of the stock gauges are gonna work, aside from the voltmeter.

Basically you are going to have to re-wire, re-route, etc.. everything. A carb windsor is a super simple engine to work with and it was a great learning experience for me and my buddies that helped. It's a whole different world from the mod motor stuff. I can have the tranny/engine/both on the ground in 2hours taking it easy.

Some things I might pass your way before you start is as follows.

1. Buy an AJE Kmember.

2. Use 351W Individual tube Foxbody headers. You may have to get a tube or 2 rebent by a professional, but don't buy into the whole story about needing "$1000 custom headers." I paid $425 for a set of 2in Kooks SS headers and paid a fabricator $60 to bend a couple to a perfect match.

3. Don't skimp on the Carb! Buy a nice Holley (or aftermarket equivalent) FIRST and don't jack around with $100-150 craigslist crap. If you are anything like myself, and don't (well didn't) know jack about carbs, it's gonna be way easier. I am currently on my 3rd one and ended up with a $800 E85 Quickfuel 950.

4. Do it the way you want the first time. I am facing decisions about a cam swap and this and that, all which should have been cleared up in the first place.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I will be using all Autometer gauges. As of now I have everything wired up aside from a speedo.

As I said before, I used the AJE kmember. They don't have a traditional motor mount, but their own modular design, its really cool. Check them out.

I am using a C4 and I had my fabricator make custom X-member made for it. You are gonna need a good fabricator, for a couple things. Another big thing about the x-member, is that if you get one custom made the fabricator will be able to LEVEL the entire drivetrain. I tried to use a T-45 x-member but it was way off as far as sitting the motor/tranny level.

This is her as of last year. I still have some things to clean up and replace a couple of hoses and dress some stuff up, get manual brakes,etc.... but you get the idea.
