Gears - Convince Me

All you guys ever talk about is getting gears for these cars... I have never been in a stang with aftermarket gears or anything, but do they really make that big of a difference? If i go from 3.27 to 3.73, am i going to say "OHHH SH*TTTT on my first drive?"

Also, i have been researching a little and everybody's opinion of which oil varies. I dont see myself spending $45 from AM for the royal purple stuff.. Which brand of oil did you guys use, and which blend, and which weight? And how many quarts? 3.0 correct?

2001gt w/ ~62K

If i were to get some gears, what else is needed? The bearing kit and NOT the install kit? Or both? And how come the posi rebuild is $125 from AM?!?! is there a cheaper alternative bc i wanted to have my posi rebuilt while it was open (posi works fine but it sounds like a good idea to rebuild it)

And lastly, 3.73 or 4.10? HAHAHAHAHAAH!!!! :D

Here is a long thread we just had about a week ago on gears:

Turbos do not like short gears... They like longer gears or stock 3.27..

Here's a better deal than american muscle. Has the bearing kit, two bottles of royal purple and one bottle of friction modifier, and the gears itself. They have the same kit but with 4.10's if you go that route.

All i have to do now is decide if i wanna do 4.10's. With my school commute i don't wanna tack 3k rpm going 75-80, i feel like it's more wear and tear on my motor.

Go with 4.10s for sure. It makes a huge difference. And i got the bearing rebuild kit from AM. I had 116000 miles on my car when i got my gears put in and the guy said the bearings didnt even need to be replaced. He said mine were in excellent condition. But jic get the rebuild kit. As for oil i just went with whatever the shop used. I didnt buy any oil.

I run Mobil 1 full synthetic and i think its 5w-30 if im not mistaken and i run it with a motorcraft filter. For gears, i went with 4.10's and im so glad i did. 3.73's wouldnt have made me happy. I actually want to go with 4.30's right now if i dont do motor work or sell the car. But going from stock to 4.10's, it wow'd me just because i could blow off first, second, and i could blow third off sometimes. Back in october i did a burnout in my old high school parking lot and without launching it hard and without powershifting, i went 1st-3rd til i hit my limiter at 6500 and i would have hit 4th but i ran out of parking lot and the car started going sideways and there was a lone Chevy truck out there that i really didnt want to hit. The smokey was probably 180-200ft long. I stepped it off but i was very generous with the steps...and this was with nitto nt555's in 285 35 18...

I hope to go with either 4.30's or 3.90's sometime soon. I havent made up my mind yet because i dont know if 4.30's will exactly be good for auto-x or not.

I expect this kind of thread from a newbie but not someone who has been on the board for as long as you.
