Would a 1999-2004 mustang be a good first car?

All depends on how good a driver you are. If you got an automatic GT, then yeah, I say it would be decent. If you are trying to learn to drive and try to drive a manual GT, then you are going to get yourself in trouble, just too much power. Insurance would be a nightmare for a 16 year old.

Personally i think a V6 mustang is a better first car then a GTP (dad owns one and its pretty fast for a 4door lol) insurance is going to be much cheaper for the V6 stang i think then a Grand Prix GTP. both are nice cars.

Get a V8 all the way. When I was 15, I got my first car which was a 94 v6. My car looked sick with my whole cobra and saleen bodykit, but the need for a v8 urged because my friends had v8s. Once i drove a v8, i fell in love. So i immediately sold it and got my v8 convertible at the age of 16. I'm 22 now and here I am alive lol. No accidents what so ever. Just drive wisely.

I think a V6 Mustang would be a great first car. It has the style and looks than has turned heads for over 40 years. I would not recommend the GT (or worse a modded GT) to any beginning driver. Some beginning drivers have the maturity to handle it but even a mature 16 year old driver lacks experience. That's why insurance rate are so high for teenagers.
When my daughter was 16 I taught her to drive a manual shift pickup and to back a horse trailer into parking spots with it. I was tired of running her and her horse everywhere. Even though she was a safe driver she still totalled two cars before she graduated high school. The first, in a downpour of rain with an approaching car she got one wheel off the road. The soft shoulder took her into a telephone pole. She was running about 45 mph. The second, on ice and snow she spun the car around hitting and going over railing approaching a bridge. She ended up hitting a tree head on while sliding on the top. It kept her from going into the river. She was driving 25-30. No one was hurt in either accident.
My son has totalled two cars on the back roads. Both at high rates of speed. He acts too much like his father to have any sense. Enough said.

Mustangs are pretty good beginner cars.Generally, what'll happen though, is a young person will get the V6 and think it's awesome, just because they finally have a Mustang, but it doesn't take long for that V8 itch to come along. Mustangs are actually rather affordable right now, so if you have an extra grand or so to purchase the V8 do it. Also prices seem to vary widely, so you can find the same exact car down to mileage (save maybe color) for widely different prices in the same area. Just search around and you're bound to find good deals. This is a buyers economy...people are getting rid of stuff they don't need.
story of my life
im glad my dad didnt let me get a GT as my first car, i had my V6 for about a year before i got my lisence just to drive around with my permit, when i got my lisence i kept my sixxer for about 3 months then my parents let me get a GT

If your going to start out with a v8 mustang, get a 96-98 mustang GT. at least you'll be running the v8 but it wont be as powerful as the 99-04 GT's and whenever you get to be a better driver, you just start making the car faster. SN95's can be had cheaper than new edges anyways. My first mustang was a 98 laser red GT and then before i got my license, my dad's work traded in an 02 convertible GT and i bought that and traded the old one in. So essentially this is my first car...that i was allowed to take out on the road alone and i havent killed myself yet. Came close...but never actually happened, as you can tell cus i sat here and typed this.

Gt would be a good first car, dont get a v6 mustang its a waist of a car in my opinion it has all of the downsides to owning a mustang with non of the good sides a v8 brings into the picture. I had a mach 1 when i was 16 and loved having a mustang. Theres so much you can do to them for not much money. Id rather have the gtp than a v6 even though i would never want a gtp lol what is your price range?
