with a centri you can easily stay out of boost for normal driving.. i dont see your mpg argument personally.. i have 4.10s and get good gm.

as far as traction goes, i would step up to a 3.55. 3.73 are not really that big of a change.
I agree, it's very easy to stay out of boost... the taller gear just helps keep the rpms down.

I didnt say its hard to stay out of boost. as far as the mpg's I heard you gain back 1-2... I guess thats a myth??? and I see I have it backwards, going UP too 3.55s huh

I wouldn't go back for mileage, but for 1/4 purposes I am actually thinking of going 3.73s from 4.10s. I don't want to run a 28" tire and I also don't want to top out 4th in the quarter once I start spraying and once my new blower is on.

Gas mileage is only gonna go up by a couple if that, but I'm not even sure about that if you are running bigger cams. If you have aftermarket cams, you know what I'm talking about. There is that rpm that they start to really smooth out....I would hate it if my car cruised under 2k on the freeway with these cams.

You could always run a 28in tire...

The 5th gear on a 3650 is .68 6th in a t-56 is .63 ....not a real mpg booster unless you go with a viper spec which is .50 IIRC. The main reason for going to a 6-speed is strength, closer ratio gears, and a usable 5th gear.

i recommend a taller tire first to see if that helps you out. Going from 4.10s to 3.73s is not going to help out your gas mileage. Personally, the thing I don't like about my 4.10s with my setup is 1st and 4th gear is way to short. 3.73s will help you out to about 120 mph rather than 110 with 4.10s. 4.10s and centri pulls like nobodys business though.

You could always keep 4.10s and go with 6 speed tranny. If I change my gears I will opt for 3.55s and a taller tire if I build my rearend some day. I will be going to a taller tire first though.

ugh this is the decision that had been plaguing me as well. I am about to install my vortech and can't decide on 4.10 or 3.73. I also have cams too. I don't want to be hitting the trap just as I shift to fourth or something. But at the same time I won't be going to the track alot. I also don't want to have to run dr's just to be able to get on it in the streets. Don't want to be all over the damn place when I hit boost in 1st and 2nd. I may go with 3.73 even tho I loved my 4.10's on my last stang that was n/a. I picked up mpg in the city and lost some on the hwy on my non pi 96.

^ yeah me too still got the 3.27s which isn't the answer either.

I'm gonna wait till I finish the car with the boost I want to run then decide.

...I skipped most posts.

For now, have you tried just skipping gears? For example, take off at a light in 2nd, then go to 4th and then 5th?
