Kinda pissed, want opinions
So some of you may know that my shortblock was making a weird noise since the first time I started the new motor up. After talking to the guy who I had the shortblock work done through (he was a middle man who has a guy who does all his machine work) he said "if you bring me the shortblock I'll be more than happy to take a look at it for you". I got a good deal on some heads so I pulled the shortblock and took it to him. He had his guy (the guy who built it to begin with) go tear it down and measure everything and reassemble it. He found nothing wrong, and leaves me a voicemail saying my shortblock is good to go and that my bill is $530. I was like WTF, he definately made it sound like he was going to do it as a favor free of charge. What do you guys think? He said that the guy who does all his work needs to get paid for the time yada yada yada and that he'd pay half so I only have to pay $265 but thats still money I wasn't ready to have to pay. Should I just pay it or try and fight with him about it some more?
eh.... I feel like it's both your faults and you should have probably gone over that with him and he probably should have told you it was gonna run ya this much to tear it apart and have a look
id never expect something like that for free. PAYMENT/MONEY should have been the first thing discussed. the FIRST question i ask is "how much do you charge for that" Your fault IMO
damn that sucks... id fight it! Most people have a warrenty on there work anyways, just say it didnt sound right and u wanted to get the work u paid alot of money for to be right...
Yea I am pissed for not making sure everything was spelled out, but myself and my gf who was with me when we discussed him looking at it thought he would be doing it as a favor since the work was done by/through him and he was the one who offered to look at it. Its not like I asked him

bite the bullet, at least you only have to pay half =/
well i guess its important to ask. does it make the noise anymore? im guessing it hasnt been fired up yet, but if his tear down and rebuild fixed it, then no big deal IMO....
$265 for piece of mind i guess... WTF could be making that noise
Its bs he doesnt warranty his work, but if its gonna run right then thats not too bad. I mean I just got 4.10s put in me and my mechanic friend did it its messed up so hes bringing it in again for free since it wasn't done right you would think he would do the same. sorry you got screwed but enjoy it being done right
The thing is he didn't find anything wrong with it but he says if he did then it would have been free. But for all I know he fixed whatever it was and is charging me for it and then sayin there wasn't anything wrong with it ya know. I doubt thats the case but its always a possibility. I'm putting different heads on it so if its still making the noise its gotta be in the trans/clutch. I am just pissed that he offered to look at it and implied it would be done as a favor and then threw a bill at me. Oh well thanks for the input guys.

Is this machinist a reputable guy ? like his work , word and quality ? If not I would have not taken it to him. I mean $260 for a tear down and piece together is not bad but its kind of a Yin and Yang situation.
It always sucks paying for something when you still have no definitive answer to solve your problem. But I think as far as this situation goes, paying half is a good deal.
ehhh i don't feel good either way on that one.
DEFINATELY your at fault for not asking if this was going to cost you. however, if the motor is making noise there's something possibly wrong with the motor and if there was any sort of warranty on your re-assembly they need to investigate it. he's shady for charging, your wrong for assuming that something was going to be for free (nothing ever is). you could possibly bring up the warranty if your motor came with one. if nothing else, this was a life lesson you learned. |
Who did you take it to?...if the problem continues I have a place that I can recommend...that sounds like what machine shops typically do...just my exp from working at one...but your right it SHOULD have been on them...none the less tell me where u got the wrk done, pm if u want...
Hope ya get it resloved

That sucks man I've had that happen when people imply that they'll do it as a favor but end up charging you. Sounds like a mis-communication, maybe you could bring it up to your buddy and say you didn't know it was gonna cost you anything. Hopefully your buddy isn't trying to rip you off or anything. Either way I'm sure things will work out, sorry your having a rough one man.
