Default damaged or warped flexplate?

My 97 auto Gt started having problems starting, It would crank over for a half sec then make a loud knock sound as the engine stops rotating and the starter would pick up again. I had a shop replace the starter and it still does it. The car also makes a clinking noise around the pass side right behind the engine which is the side the starter is on.

This only happens once in a while where as all the other starts are normal.

Would damaged flexplate teeth cause the starter to act this way? I also get a vibration at idle with the car in D I dont know if its anything related to the flexplate.

This is just really embarasing when people look at my car like its some amazing stang(although I like the 03 cobra I park next to more ) and it makes a loud sound like it just broke.

Ive been told things like that and sounds right, when starting and cranking over for a good 3-5 sec period it kinda sounds like grinding metal. im having a shop check it out thursday for free.
