Default point of hood liner

My hood liner looks like a rat's nest and am tired of looking at it. However i dont want to spend the money to order a new one. can i just take the old one off and go without one altogether or would that not be good? also what is the point of the hood liner?

Looks pretty (well not in your case apparently) and helps insulate underhood noise a little. If you don't like yours, or what's left of it, feel free to rip it out.

so if i remove it wont cause too much engine heat to peel the paint or anything? and i just read on another forum website that if you take it out and spray armor all tire foam on it and let it soak for about 30 minutes it should look good as new. i just tried it and will look at the results in the morning lol

Shouldn't cause the paint to peel, every aftermarket hood I'm aware of doesn't have a liner and as far as I'm aware paint issues due to underhood heat aren't an epidemic of any sort. My '06 Ranger and wife's minivan don't have liners (but do have steel hoods if that makes a difference). Good idea with the tire foam, although I would just pressure wash the crap out of it. The underside of the hood would look kinda naked without the liner I think. When you said it looks like a rat's nest I took that to mean that it was all shredded up, if it's just grimy it should clean up reasonably I think.

I would also recommend power washing it!

one of the main reasons for a hood liner is if there is a fire under the hood the liner will basically melt over the engine and contain or put the fire out

X2 on looking naked without it. it exposes all of the strength ridges in it.
