Default quick question.. widest tire to fit a stock GT rim

So just looking at tires. What is the LARGEST tire people are being able to fit (without problems) on the stock GT 8.5" rims? will 270's fit?

275-40s will fit OK, not perfectly but safely and not-to-bad...

so what do you mean by "fits OK" cliffy? Like, they will inflate, but under a hard turn, they will rip off the rim? What are the problems I could possibly face w/ a 275 tire on a stock rim?

I run 275/40-17s on the rear with no problems, and that includes at times some "spirited" cornering...

My OK comment was mostly a condescension to those who will say that the "sidewall" bulges too much-I don't find that it does to any great extent...

yeah I am looking into a good set of Nitto 555R's for the rear, I don't think I can justify buying the straight DR's since I will still be driving this car daily. (although I Reallyyyyy want to haha)

Ok this is good news then. Will a set of Nitto 555R 275-40-17's greatly improve my traction? (Especially over Sumi-Crapos?)
