android phone dyno

hey guys my friend has a mytouch phone with this program called "dinodyno", well several friends who have taken their cars down the 1/4 mile used the program and said the number the phone said were a little faster than what they ran. well ive never taken my car to the track but the phone said i ran a 11.992. my car is a completely gutted 2000 gt automatic. with full bolt ons. and when i mean gutted the car weighs 2971 without me in it. just wondering if those times are close? i know i sound like a noob. im really not, just never been close enough to a track to go. plus being in the army im never really here that much. thanks guys for any help

haha i have a similar app on my Motorola Droid called aDyno, and used it when i went to the track(1/8th mile). app is crap, was a full 3 seconds off and the best part is it said i would do 220+ mph in the 1/4, lol. i wish that was true.

My iphone app is called pocket dyno, I haven't been able to really get it to work, some guy that I know though bought the dynolicious app on his iphone, and swears by it lol....I dunno meng

I'm too cheap to pay 13.99 for the app lol I'd rather go to the track where it's legal to drive like that and figure out what I can do. Last thing I'd want to do is get caught for driving like that lol

Having written software to do this I'll throw in my 2¢ worth.

The phone apps use the GPS signal to determine when you start moving, and when you have traveled 1/4 mile--so right off the bat there is no reaction time included. That makes them reads a bit fast even if a "fudge factor" is thrown in. This by itself is not a horrible thing as the numbers from "run-to-run" would still be comparable

But wait, there's more!

And this is the bad part. The accuracy of GPS can vary quite a bit, and quite rapidly, depending on a whole bunch of factors beyond the scope of this thread.

Over typical distances and time traveled, distances measured in tens or hundreds of miles and seconds, this is not an issue. However when the distance is a lousy 1320 feet, and the elapsed time is 12 seconds the accuracy of the GPS signal can wreak havoc with both the accuracy and repeatability of the numbers these apps record.

IMHO¹, they are interesting and fun toys that when working as well as can be expected may have some tuning value; but overall they are no substitute for accelerometer based instruments (like the G-Tech products), or even OBD2 based systems. That's why I abandoned any further pursuit of GPS based performance monitoring software.

------------------------------------------
¹ = OK, I admit maybe not so humble...

thats the G-Analyzer program, which works just like the G-Tech. its a nifty little feature for a not-that-expensive, good quality head unit
