Default Mustang newbee help

Ok I have always owned camaros and know nothing about mustangs. My brother needed money so i got his 97 m5 cheap. Ok this car is very slow compared to what im used to with my old z28. Where do i start it has short throw, 4.10, cai, ford puck clutch, and he has 2 cats left with straight pipe and a h pipe, no mufflers and it does not sound all that good and pops alot i need advice on that and any free mods to start with. What are good mods that make a difference any weight reduction. I was thinking headers and x pipe with bullet mufflers and getting mil elims. I want it to be loud and have that awesome mustang sound of course. Any advice will be appreciated fellows!!

What is it that changes when upgrading from the 1996-1998 NPI heads and intake to the 1999-2004 Mustang GT’s is the NPI heads that came stock on all 96-98 GT’s use a different internal design therefore creating the need for a new intake manifold. When you are upgrading your intake and your heads you’ll also need to pick up some additional parts (see below):

Parts:PI intake, NPI gaskets (2), thermostat o-ring, water pump o-ring, updated coolant/heater tube, updated alternator bracket, updated thermostat housing bolts (2), and the updated water pump nipple that connects to the heater tube.

FYI the PI heads are not the 4V heads, those are a whole other story with a deep wallet.

Save the money on the MIL's and go straight to a tuner, IMO the factory tune is very conservative and needs free'd up a bit.

Personally, if I were to own a 96-98 GT, I'd go the extra mile and get either ported heads or trickflow heads with a bit more aggressive set of cams. If you're ripping it apart anyway, I think the extra money will be well worth it when you see the jump in power.
