Default Noob question about 2v,3v, 4v

Ok I just recently bought a 03 GT. My girlfriend has a 2008 GT
I've been a VW man for along time and I'm trying to soak in info on GT's as fast as I can.
since I've been to the local parts dealer I understand my 03 is a 2V?
I was wondering who or what makes have the 3v and 4v's and are they interchangable since I see Modular in the 4.6L name.
Is the Cobra a 4v?
I'm assuming the block is the same except for possibly piston changes and such for forced air etc...
Also I understand they went to an aluminum block in 05? Are the aluminum and iron blocks interchangable as far as motor mounts and locations etc?
Also just a passing fantasy is the new 5.0 and 6speed tranny close in mounting locations as the 99-04? Was wondering if anyone has considered for future plans putting a new 5.0 in the 99-04? Not sure what all problems it would have with the ECM and making it work on the older car.

Anyway hope I haven't annoyed anyone.
Thanks for any input.

you can put 3v or 4v heads on your car and the 96-08 blocks are interchangable. yes the cobra is a 4v. as for the 5.0, i dont think a company has came out with a swap kit yet, may never will.

its easier to buy a complete 4v motor than put 4v heads on a 2v motor (and i dont even think the heads line up to be honest with you). the new 5.0 will probably be swapped in at some point by someone, but it has not been out long enuff for anyone to have a "swap kit" if its even going to be possible without tons of modifications (hell there may be a swap kit now, but i havent seen one)

and yes the 3v is an aluminum block.

what exactly are you wanting to do with your car... most people just supercharge their 2v's because its about the same price to do a used blower and supercharge a 2v than swap in a 3 or 4v motor. the internals are the same on the 2, 3, and 4 valve motors except the 03/04 cobras (their motors are forged, and are expensive). so you can spend 2500$ and supercharge your car and have 400rwhp, or you can spend 2500$ and swap in a 3 or 4v motor and have far less than that with little room to grow since (unless you get the cobra motor or a built motor) the internals are all the same.

allright well

96-04 cobras, 4.6l 4v - 96-99 Teksid aluminum block only 96-98 cobra heads/intakes can be used on 96-98s Mercury mark VIII components work as well but are a small downgrade (heads i think are the same intake is a little worse)
99-04 cobras are all interchangable as are 03/04 Mach 1s which are also 4vs, share the same heads as 03/04 cobras and a VERY similar if not identical intake to the 99/01 cobras.

All cobras have a forged crank as do MANUAL mach 1s, only 03/04 cobras have forged pistons and rods as of 04.
01 Cobra block is W.A.P (windsor aluminum plant block) i think some late 99s got it as well, the 03/04 cobra block is iron, i think the machs are too or possibly W.A.P.

3vs go 05-10. aluminum motor.
Im sure the 5.0 is possible to go in 94-04s but truth be told the big bore modular is not new to modular cars, just new in production, 4v guys have been doing big bore 5.1 and up liter builds for a while breaking 400whp all motor. Thats where im headed just as soon as money allows.

i already started the build and have a set of ported pi heads with crane springs, ti valve retainers, regrind valve seats, stage 2 crower blower cams, + more. pretty much a completly reworked set of heads. i want to build a 5.4 stroked runing 9.0to1 compression and vortech which is already on the car with a fmic.

Thats what I like to hear guys!!!
Thanks for all the good info.
I just got my car so I'm not planning anything in the near future. Just gonna fix it up and enjoy it for awhile, but I was interested in maybe building an Aluminum 4.6 or 5.0 in the future and FI or NA not sure yet. May get to old to enjoy it before I can build it. lol
Just wondering what parts I could look for to build it when I decide what rout I wanna go with it.
are all blocks basically the same size and mounting locations? I guess right now what I am looking at is if a got a 05-10 motor and ECM setup could I mount it in my 03 using my 03 tranny? I know the ECM may have some issues, but mounting and matching wise would that work?
