Default IAC Question, is my friend right?

Recently my 01 SALEEN, has had an idle problem, it's random sometimes it will start up fine and idle fine but other times it will die and rough idle go from about 1k to 0. It dies alot, My friend unplugged the Iac hose and it stil idled the same, so he said there is no point to clean the IAC, and should just replace it. I have yet to try to clean it, do you think i should just buy a new IAC or try cleaning it first.

This is a very common issue with this vehicle. The problem is involved with mechanical wear of the plastic valve with veins. They eventually wear down. If you have a cleaner that can magically restore and reshape plastic back to new then cleaning will do just fine. Otherwise it needs to be replaced. Mine is currently making the "i'm really really effing hungry" growl sound once it warms up and needs to be replaced, but i'm too busy supercharging my car to care lol.

Go to the dealership and bend over, its about $100.

The disconnecting the hose doesn't prove anything (you need to unplug the electrical connector, the engine rpm should drop immediately, maybe even stall)--however your IAC is likely dead or dying.

Cleaning it is a waste of time, just buy a new one.

Here's what it looks like inside.

If your IAC looks like this then you have the newer one:
