I'm with 945, i have jacked it up by the pumpkin many times on all my vehicles, just in front of the bottom of the cover. Wonder why ford says that??? As thick as the bottom of the pumpkin is why not lift there? Probably a liablity thing of some sort.

Actually it has to do with the axle tubes being pressed, pinned, and brazed into the differential housing with a slight upward angle at the ends, so as to create a bit of negative camber (0.5° or so). And that that fitment is not engineered to support the weight of the vehicle.

That it can does not alter that it was not intended to do so, and over time lifting the car via jacking on the "pumpkin" may create a problem...

I have jacked my car up many times from the diff.... and now that I think about it I did use to have a small leak from the diff cover. I dont know if that was related or not... However it has since been fixed when I re-sealed it and replaced the oil with fresh RP I will not jack it up again by the diff though If I can help it. However I have always done this and have always seen this done MULTIPLE times, never heard of any problems wiht it.
