Steering shaft bad or entire rack?

Steering shaft bad or entire rack?
Ok so the car is a 2001 and only has like 60k on her. The guy doing the alignment was showing me where the slight vibration in my steering wheel was coming from. With it on the rack and wheels free he grabbed the front driver side wheel and shook it. I could hear slight clanking. It sounded more to me like it was a joint in the steering shaft rather than rack. But I don;t know what;s more prone to going out on these. I am not losing any power steering fluid and ball joints look great. I seem to remember hearing about the rag doll type joint or something on the shaft going bad.
What's a good upgrade that won't break the bank? I am a 1/4mile guy so performance steering isn't really important. However I don't want to chance safety on this worn out joint....

Can you feel a clunk in the steering wheel at all? If you can feel it in the steering wheel/column while turning the wheel, it's probably the shaft.
It could also just be a worn tie rod, inner or outer. Either you can replace without getting a new rack.

Yeah I can feel a slight clunk in the wheel. How hard is the shaft to replace? What would be a good replacement? I want something more durable but I am not to concerned with adding any performance benefit if it's going to be to much added cost.
