I was changing my fuel pump yesterday and on the process of removing it, a portion of the inlet tube that attaches to the fuel tank broke off.
Inside this tube was a spring and a plastic cylindrical piece.
Does anyone know what is the function of these two pieces?

Was this piece on the fuel filler neck? If so that piece is there to allow the fuel to enter the tank but not travel back up the tube as your driving.
