Default i joined the mustang club and have a exhaust question

Hey guys. I finally got my self a Mustang gt. I have wanted a stang for about 20 years and it sits in my garage now. I scored a 97 white gt vert with 40k miles. it is in mint condition, always garage kept my it only owner who was 70 when he bought it new. you can tell this was his retirement cruiser. it is all stock down to the cassete deck.

So far i installed a CD player with bluetooth and a SLP loudmouth cat back.

For the cat back i got the drivers side pipe to not hit the rear bumper but i cant seem to not get the tip of the pass side to hit the bumper. Will the tip get hot enough to damage the bumper? should i put some heat sheald tape on the bumper where the tip hits?

thanks in advance guys

Welcome and congrats on a great find. As far as the exhaust goes I would have to say something is wrong. The exhaust should not come in contact with the rear bumper. I am sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in.

im not sure what else i can do. the drivers side is onll 1/4 inch from the bumper and the pass side is just touching it. from the underside if you try to pull the exhaust down the rubber brackets are at full lenghth. i did idel and rev the car for about 15 mins and the tip was still cool to the toutch. its my first car with a aftermarket exhaust so sorry if it seem like i dont have a clue because i do not, i do have to say that this forum is a very good help.

this is the drivers side with 1/4 inch of gap

this is the pass side that is touching

I loosened the clamps and tried to adjust it like 6 times. on the last time i even had my son push down on the tip so there was a 1 inch gap and as i tightened the clamps it went right back up. as long as damage is not a issue i will not worry

Congrats on the new purchase. i Dont see the tip getting hot enough to melt the bumper or do any damage. I know both my 02 and my 89 i can put my hand on the tips and its barely warm

shouldnt have a problem with tips getting hot.
i have/had an slp catback on my 03 with a turbo kit and it never got hot even after a 230 mile drive up to my parents.

I think I agree with comments about not enough heat to melt the bumper, but I think that a rattle will exist. The constant rubbing of the pipe against the bumper will wear a spot on it. Perhaps they are all exactly the same, but is there a chance that you were sent the wrong exhaust kit? Maybe the clearances are different on different year models. If you still have the box, verify the part number is correct. If that is all correct, I would loosen all exhaust connections and retighten them starting at the front. If possible, raise up on the mid-pipe and front of the catback as much as it will allow when you tighten those connections. Higher positioning of the mid-pipe may drop your tips slightly.
GOOD LUCK getting this adjusted to your satisfaction! CLEAN car btw!

Yeah loosen it all up. I know my tips also have a little hex nut that tightens the exhaust hanger to the tip itself. I can loosen mine and get some movement there too. You might try and put something as a buffer to physically block the pipe from wanting to move up towards the bumper while tightening everything, as it seems to be wanting to do.

i've found that from the axle back to be the sturdiest part of the whole exhaust, and that rattling is less of an issue from there, than it is forward of the axle. this might just be the way it sits for me, but when i unbolted it to try and remove it (what a pain since i couldnt, damn thing was welded in so now i have to cut it out) it was pretty freakin sturdy out back. IMO they need more hangers up front where the mufflers are.
