It won't destroy fuel economy. maybe 1/2mpg if you do a lot of highway driving (80%+ of each tank of gas).
I know because my EGR valve got sticky and sluggish causing a surge/skip at light load steady speeds (45 to 55 in particular)--so I turned it off in the tune, and plan on deleting it when I get around to it:
It cost me less than 1/3mpg with about 65% of my driving being on I-95 here in the flatlands.
