Default Fuel mileage

Ok I've been seeing guys claiming that they get 26-28 MPG out of their GT. How and why? I can't see more then 23 or so ALL highway out of my 00 GT. The car's mostly stock, just some bolt ons, factory gears and all. Does the .62 OD gear in the newer cars actually make that big of a difference? My car has 76k miles on it now, all synthetic fluids, even UDP and I can't pull more then 23. The car was and still is maintained very well so it's in tip top shape as far as I know. I have cleaned the MAF, changed the fuel filter and cleaned my air filter. I don't jump on the gas hard or anything on my straight highway trips, so why can't I get better than 23? Any help is REALLY appreciated.

TIA

What speed do you travel at on the highway? I got 28mpg on a trip to VA and was averaging 62-65mph.

I average 25 on the interstate, going about 80 mph. Never traveled all highway before. But really, it's a V8 Mustang....I know I didn't buy mine for gas mileage. So, at the very least, don't worry about getting better than 23 mpg. That is still ok mileage.

On trips youre still supposed to get decent mileage. I know when I go on trips I dont want to be getting poor gas mileage. The more money I save on the trip down and back, the more money I have for other things when I get there.

Is the highway pretty flat or hilly? If I drive the toll road by me I get about 4 mpg less in one direction simply because the grade of the hills are super steep going north. Not sure where you lie at but I'm sure in flatter stated you can get better mpg. my 02 GT was averaging about 22-23 btw

I average about 1/3 of a gallon per pass, so 1.333 GPM. LOL. But street cruising I get about 16 around town, and 19-20 on highway. If gas mileage is really that big of a concern they have a new product out called a Prius that should help.

i got 27 driving from atlanta to pensacola. it has a K&N cold air intake, flowmasters, eibach lowering suspension, and racing tires. not sure brand or size but they are very wide. all those except the tires help with the gas milage. try putting a cold air on it. it makes a huge difference. it is a mustang though if you wanted to get good mpg you bought the wrong car

Wow...heres my mods list.

JLT CAI
Magnaflow catted x
FRPP Catback
03 Cobra IRS w/ 3.55's
Heavy a$$ 18x9/10.5 03 Cobra replicas with 335/30's out back(Wheel and tire weighs over 65lbs)
Full Coilover suspension
FTBR bushing kit
91 canned tune running 93 gas

Nothing there really shouts "I'm helping get better mpg!" Running cruise control actually ruins gas mileage and so does traveling over 65mph. For every 5mph over 65 you go, you will decrease your gas mileage by 1mpg. Just throwing that out there guys.

Good luck getting better gas mileage. I've found shifting between 1800-2100rpm will also help get the best mpg for me. Lugging it and shifting below 1500rpm doesnt help.
