Change trans fluid

i think i need to add or just change my fluid. the tranny shifts great but the shift knob gets real hot dont know what that could be, also the trans kinda whins other than that it does good. it is a 5 speed 03 gt

Isn't Mobil 1 synthetic ATF the OEM fluid, at least in the 3650? I prefer Mobil 1 for both my tranny and engine (not atf in the engine obviously lol).
Not sure what year you are asking about, but they also changed the qty in the 3650 in the middle of the years (02-ish or so?) and it's NOT even with the bottom of the fill hole like is usually assumed. You will have to look up the real qty needed or have somebody else tell you if you need it as I don't know it off the top of my head.

How many miles is on the fluid your running now? I running Redline D4.

scott4.6 07-24-2011 08:35 PM

the car has 100,000 miles on it, as far as the fluid i have no idea. is it normal for our shifter knob to get hot?

TRUEBLUE3934 07-24-2011 08:38 PM

The new recommended fluid level for the 3650 is 102oz.

Ive never heard of the shift knob getting hot. On mine it was pretty much the whole shifter console was getting hot on long drives. I could feel the radiant on my leg, after changing the 100k+ old fluid, it hasn't been a problem since.

OP, do you have the stock shifter?

Also, as TrueBlue' indicated the recommended fill is 3.0 L (3.2 qt) per TSB 04-15-6. The higher 3.8 qt factory fill does make the tranny run a bit hot at higher input speeds.

I ran RP Synchromax for 70k miles (changed twice) as I could get it at cost, however when the recession killed that I loaded M1 ATF and find that it is smoother than the RP and nearly eliminates the 1-2 glitch...

M1 ATF is one of Tremec's recommended lubes, per their service manual:

Sheesh, I must have been tired last night. My reply was more aimed at another post that I must have read before this one where they were talking about what fluid to use in the T45/TR3650... but it does sort of fit here too.

+1 on Mobil 1 Synth ATF at the 3.0L fill level. Much smoother shifts, worlds of difference from stock!!

I just bought a Mustang today, and noticed that the shifter knob on it starting get hot by the time I got home.
If I took the car somewhere to change the fluid will they most likely put the factory amount in, thus being too full?
It has a short throw shifter and a billet knob if that matters.
