No one has bothered (or at least mentioned) to check KBB Retail/Private party price..funny. KBB has the retail valued at $10.8K (Chandler, AZ area) Mass area will vary. Private party is $9.8K in excellent condition.
Dealer is asking 12.5K because someone will pay that or will get $1K to 1.5K taken off the 12.5K and they think they're getting a deal. The buyer would still be over paying.
Anyways OP, stick with your offer 6K plus your truck (but find out what it's worth BEFORE you go in) and like the dealership, start high on your truck value and let the dealer work on tha part.
I played this game with the dealer for my sons car. KBB had it for 9K dealer was asking 11K. Before I even said a Peep the sales guy saw I had the KBB for the car in my hand as I walked in. Right off the bat he said he'd sell me the car for 9K. Told him no deal. If that was the price to start I might have but since I had to do some work, my time is valuable. Got the car for $8,250, full tank of gas and a free oil change.
