Default Romeo or Windsor?

I just purchased my first mustang, it's a 98 gt convertible. I bought it with a blown head gasket and with the motor disassembled. While it's apart I want to replace the timing chain/gears/guides (109,000 miles) but have found kits specific for Romeo or Windsor manufactured motors. How do I tell which plant my motor was made at? Just looking for insight.

Hey bud,

I think they were all Romeos until 2000 or so, when they started mixing in Windsors... Not 100% certain, hopefully someone else will chime in, but I'm pretty sure a 98 is guaranteed to be a Romeo...

-----

Gee no wonder you have to ask, I was curious and have been digging around for the last 20 minutes or so, and there are a lot of conflicting answers to this question out there. I have seen completely backward/contradictory answers regarding the New Edge model years, but most seem to agree that 96-98 is a Romeo...

Here's a post I found on stangnet.com, maybe that will help:

Romeo and Windsor are two different plans that make the 4.6L motor. There were some instances where 99-01 mustangs received the Romeo motor and others received the Windsor. The easiest way to tell is to count the number of bolts in your valve covers. The Romeo has 11 bolts. The Windsor is a little different. The oil fill side has 14 holes (13 bolts) and the non-oil fill side has 13.

Easiest way to tell is by vin. Go online to a vin search website. Type in your vin and get it!

96 -98 gt are romeo engines. 99-around early 01 are windsor while 01-04 aree romeo. the easiest way to find out is to count the valve cover bolts, 11 is romeo while 13/14 is windsor

Its definitely a Romeo. As stated before, count the valve cover bolts if you want to be certain.

Thanks for the insight, got everything ordered, looking forward to getting it going and on the road, upgrades to come in the near future, just happened to be on craigslist at the right time and got a steal of a deal on the car.
