Pull the head, if you don't you might miss a couple pieces of metal that can do a lot of damage quickly. Then you would have to totally rebuild the engine, not worth the risk.

i dropped the intake valve and used a magnet to pull the old insert right out. hardest part was getting to the valve honestly.

after getting it out i did other sweeps with the magnet and then i used my compression check gauge as way of pumping air into the head and i would rock the crank back and forth opening and closing the intake and exhaust ports while the compressor was pumping air into the head through the spark plug hole. i bumped the engine over 1 turn a few times with the spark plug hole open just to see if there was any debris i didnt get.

i buttoned her back up and it fired off after the fuel pressure built up, but it had a skip. i couldnt tell where but i knew it sounded like it was from the drivers side bank. i drove down the the gas station to throw some fuel in it and see if it wasnt just being stubborn and on the way back i threw a code: P0308, which said it was a misfire code for cylinder #8. i think its just possibly the injector is a little clogged. lookin at it later on today.

thanks for the replies. i know i didnt pull the head but it seems i really didnt need to. im fairly sure i was able to get all of the debris out and i even ran a compression check on it afterwards and it checked out.

yes i know this. the old insert, however, was steel, and it had fragments and shavings in the head which i collected with the magnet. when the guy ran the tap through the spark plug hole for the timesert he didnt really cut new threads because it had already been cut for the old insert. he used a ton of grease when he did it too, so he collected a vast majority of whatever shavings he did make. anything that got away was most likely vacuumed up or blown out, as i did both at several stages in the rebuilding process.
