Default Hydroboost really gone or not?

I took the 97GT in to have the brakes checked because they dont feel strong to me. They have a lot more slack in them then I'd think was necessary. So the mechanic says the hydroboost is DOA. Well, I know it brakes cuz I had to stop pretty hard last night.

Power steering feels okay to me, I braked while loosely holding the wheel and there was no pull, and I believe I could probably lock the brakes on it.

How can I test the hydroboost on this? I don't want to throw down a grand to find out there was really no problem at all and it's just the difference between my '10 and a 15 year old car.

All the research I've done here indicates that this could be a problem, but how do I test it? I really want to know because the mechanics who are saying this is a problem and needs replaced need 3 hours shop time with 2 mechanics doing the work. This doesnt smell right to me especially since the PS feels just fine as is.
