Default Starter diagnosis

Ok, so this morning went to start my 2000 Mustang GT, and it took three tries to start the motor. First three I was awarded with the sound of the bendix not contacting the flywheel. Vrrrp!

Without getting too much into it. Should I just replace the starter, or try and rebuild it?

Had it tested at O'Reilly's and the bendix chattered back and forth very rapidly when the current was put to it, but according to their machine it passed.

Now for those of you that say replace it,. What is the best to replace with? Remain with Motorcraft ($244.00 w/core), or I was eyeballing the PA Performance ($129.00) on AM which is considerably less and isn't trying to charge me a core charge. I know the answer is obvious, I'm concerned with reliability, I'm still running pretty much stock, or worse yet should I just use a <cough> Duralast?
Thank you for all your help and Merry Christmas!

It sounds as though the solenoid is weak, or the bypass contacts are shot. A local auto-electric shop could probably rebuild it, however most FLAPS have new starters.

Advance Auto has a new Remy (used to be Delco-Remy) starter for $136 (I have had one in my '03 GT for over 2 years and 40k miles):

Autozone has their Duralast Gold starter for $139, also new:

Which sure looks like it was made by Remy...

These are both OEM equivalent units made by OEM manufacturers, I.e. just like your stock starter that lasted 13 years--so why spend any more?

I thought the name sounded familiar! Local availability is iffy, regardless. Thanks for the guidance CliffyK.

It is a very common starter, any FLAPS should have it in stock or be able to get it quickly--like same day if you order it early...

I about dropped my beer when I saw what ford wanted for the MC starter! Advance carries MC too, they are 40.00 more somewhere around 283.00! Gah! I'll go with AZ gold, 144.44 out the door with my military discount.
BTW Cliff, sent you a PM, wanted to see if you had some insight.
