Anybody runs Motul here? Don't know if you have it in US, but its popular among racing enthusiasts
I used to use Motul 300V 5w30, but after starting to hit the track occasionally changed to 300v 15w50.

I run red line 5w40 w/ FL1hp filter, Oil changes range depending on type of driving, amount of driving, and how the dipstick looks. I've gone up to mostly between 5000-7500, if I'm pushing it hard then 3k. I work at a motorcycle shop and talk to a few oil reps and they consistently run their cars to 10k and bikes to 7500-10k, one guy does an oil change on his suburban every 22k miles (he found that interval by running oil analysis's of his SUV for his company) .

What I was told and have found a few sites backing up the claim, is that all oil has additives in it, the percentage of this additive is normally in the 5% range of the total volume. Within that 5%, about 75-90% (from what I was told by reps without giving me too much info) is wear/friction reducers and the rest being detergents. The detergents are designed to clean off contaminants and strip off the old oils' wear/friction reducers film. This (again was told this) normally lasts for the first 1,000 miles and while the new oil's friction/wear reducers are being pressurized/heat bonded to new wear areas of the engine, while this process takes place the engine is actually under more strain since there is no longer a layer of the reducer on these high wear areas.

Anyways it's late and I'm sleepy so I'll post up a quick link I just googled to explain the rest. I'll post up other info I was told by a few of the oil reps while they visited us, to some extent that is.. not supposed to be giving specifics.

The owner's manual for my 96 calls for 5w-30. I wonder why they changed it to 5w-20 if it's still pretty much the same motor............

CAFE standards...

The argument regarding "improved and tighter manufacturing tolerances" can be easily disproven by comparing the component specs and wear limits for any late 60s and contemporary engine--you will find they are the same...

I know this is an old thread...but I just wanted to say that I run mostly 5w 30 Motorcraft oil with the 820S filter. No problems. I ran Castrol Full Synthetic and did not notice a difference between the two.
