Default 4.6 how do i tell the year of the motor

ok so I had a 96gt for a year then I totaled it. I bought a 97gt shell and put my stuff motor, trans, wiring harness in there . well the alternator went bad and when I went to buy a new one the 96wireing was different then the one that was on my car when I bought it. they looked up the one that was on the car when I got it and said it was from a 99-04gt. is there ne way for me to tell what year motor mine has in it or if it has the pi heads

I believe that the accessories were different from the NPI to PI engines.
You can always pull a valve cover and see if "PI" is on the heads.
The intake manifold and valve covers could've been changed to PI, so a quick visual can't truly answer your question.
