Engine Knock, Rebuilding a 4.6L HELP
Looking for some direction.
I have a 2000 4.6 GT with 72K that I'm experiencing a knock in the engine. It has gotten worse and worse. I have thought about dropping the pan and putting new crank/rod bearings in the engine but think it might be too late.
At this point I'm ready to pull and replace the engine.
Would it be a cheaper better option to just buy a used engine? I would like to rebuild it and be able to push a little more power. Is there a good rebuild kit out there for decent money? Or should a Cobra Engine?
Thanks

Why do you think it's too late?Too late is when they grenade. Knocks aren't solved by just bolting in new bearings. The crank needs to be turned, and the appropriately sized bearings used.
A used engine is a gamble unless you know it's history and why it's available.(Low mileage, from a wrecked car,for example)I wouldn't be doing the labor to put in an unknown motor that could have high miles or little servicing...or a knock.
I would seek a reman from a reputable rebuilder. For a different model of Ford,I had good luck with Ford authorized remans.

It hasn't grenaded yet, but it has gotten worse. I originally ran the car low on oil. I have just about every bolt on accessory for the car. I want to be able to push more power.
Would an Eagle rebuild kit be a good stroker kit?

I have an engine rebulding shop down the road I can use, but want to get some information before I go to them.

I can't answer performance questions-my cars have always been completely stock.
You're in for a pricey ride with using that kit.Add labor, gasket sets, add a new oil pump, perhaps add a cylinder rebore. The cams, etc, may have been damaged as well.No way to know what you're spending until it's opened up.
Once upon a time,we threw a lot of money at a 87 5.0 T-Bird that was essentially damaged in the same way as yours. Not run low on oil,but run with a clogged pick up screen, which was essentially the same thing, and resulted in a bad knock. We had a replacement crankshaft and bearings installed. In hindsight,I wouldn't do that again.
As much as I was one to think that things can be repaired and kept indefinitely,I've learned that there is also a time to throw in the towel, and put the resources to something better.
